The Middleton-Cross Plains Area School District is proud to announce earning a 2026 Green Ribbon for its sustainability initiatives from the U.S. Green Building Council and the Center for Green Schools. MCPASD was one of two honorees in Wisconsin to be recognized for making progress in the award program’s three pillars: reducing environmental impact, enhancing health and wellness, and increasing environmental and sustainability literacy.
“We’re honored to earn state-level recognition and show how long-term planning, innovation, and community engagement can create lasting environmental and educational impact,” said Assistant Superintendent of Operations Jerrud Rossing. “This award shows that we’re on the right path as we continue working to reduce our environmental impact and to empower student leaders in driving positive change.”
MCPASD’s recognition was for making sustainability a cornerstone of its operations and educational mission, including a commitment to meet 100% of its operational energy needs with renewable energy by 2035. The District’s investments in solar power, geothermal systems, decarbonization, and energy-efficient building design have avoided more than $6.3 million in utility costs since 1990. In addition, solar installations at six MCPASD schools can provide up to 95% of each school's electricity needs.
The District also was recognized for supporting student leaders in driving sustainability efforts through Green Teams, environmental programs, school gardens, greenhouses, and food recovery initiatives that support local food pantries. Students’ work is supported by District-wide wellness efforts to promote healthy learning environments.
The Green Ribbon honor is the latest accolade MCPASD has received for prioritizing sustainability. In the 2025-26 school year, the District earned the 2025 Sustainable Middleton Award from the City of Middleton and the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction’s 2026 Stewardship and Sustainability Award.
