Kromrey, Pope Farm, Elm Lawn and Sauk Trail were each recognized as winners of the second annual Healthy Kids Healthy Schools awards.

Kromrey was one of only 14 schools to be selected a Gold award winner. Pope Farm was named a Silver award winner, while Elm Lawn and Sauk Trail were named Bronze award winners. Fewer than 50 schools in Dane County were recognized in all.

The Healthy Kids Healthy School awards recognize area schools for the work they do to promote health and well-being for students, staff and families. Some of the efforts recognized by MCPASD schools were:

  • Having a daily, healthy salad bar in the cafeteria.
  • Providing access to the playground before and after school.
  • Giving students access to stretching breaks during class time.

MCPASD had nine schools -- Northside, Park, Sauk Trail, West Middleton, Glacier Creek and Kromrey (gold winners) and Elm Lawn, Sunset Ridge and CSCS (silver winners) -- recognized a year ago.

Each participating receives a window cling. Each school will also receive their results and a customized action plan.

Participating schools were asked to complete an assessment and gauge current activities in the following areas: healthy foods in schools, being active in school, and healthy and well in school. Activities such as planting a school garden or providing active indoor recess earned points for schools.
