Clark Street Community School senior Aaliyah Espinoza has been selected a 2021 Herb Kohl Educational Foundation Student Initiative Scholarship winner.

Espinoza was one of just nine selected in the CESA 2 region. In all, 200 graduating high school seniors will receive either Excellence or Initiative scholarships.

"I am extremely thankful for the Herb Kohl Scholarship Award,'' Espinoza said.. "This award will take stress off of my family and I as I prepare myself for college next fall. This is an amazing opportunity that I am endlessly grateful for."

Initiative Scholarship recipients are chosen by their schools and have demonstrated exceptional initiative in the classroom along with showing strong promise toward success in college and beyond. Students who haven't received other academic-based scholarships are eligible.

Espinoza was also one of just 15 District students who received an Urban League of Greater Madison 2021 MLK Outstanding Young Person Awards in January.

The Kohl Foundation Scholarship and Fellowship program was established by former U.S. Senator, philanthropist and businessman Herb Kohl in 1990. Since then the Foundation has awarded nearly $25 million to Wisconsin educators, principals, students and schools.

"We are thrilled that during such a tumultuous time in education, Wisconsin’s students, teachers, principals and schools are recognized for their devotion to education and learning”, Wisconsin Council of Religious and Independent Schools board president Dr. Chris Cody said in a statement.
