The MHS boys skiing team captured the Southern Wisconsin Conference championship on Monday, Feb. 8 and qualified for this weekend's Wisconsin Alpine Racing Association (WIARA) State Championships at Mount La Crosse.

The Cardinals will compete in the slalom, giant slalom and Super-G at state. The boys competition will take place on Sunday, Feb. 14. Hartland Arrowhead won the 2020 state title, while Middleton finished sixth out of 21 teams. The Cardinals were seventh in 2019.

"The kids had a rough start to the season with all of the early season practice canceled, getting a really late start to the season, and placing fifth in the first race,'' coach Brian Feltz said. "But the team is deep, driven, and very focused. It's so much fun to watch them race and I can't wait to see what they do at state. Thank you to the parents or their support this season and all the coaches that have helped them get to this point.''

Griffin Ward placed third at conference, while Zach Ostreng was sixth and Jude Kunkel 10th. Ward and Ostreng will compete at state for the third straight year, while Kunkel will compete for the second straight year. Other state returnees are Nathan Shaw and Alex Seaborg. Also skiing at state will be Blake Lindsey and Egor Cheranev. Ward finished sixth in the giant slalom at state in 2020 and 14th overall.

The Cardinals had two competitions before the conference meet. They raced in two giant slaloms at Cascade Mountain in Portage and last week competed in two slalom races at Devil's Head in Baraboo.

The team is coached by Feltz and Midori Shaw.
