A group of 36 incoming freshmen got a head start on high school this summer through MCPASD's Bridge to Success program. Designed to boost confidence and build community, the four-day program gives participants a chance to explore the Middleton High School campus, meet staff, learn about post-high school opportunities, and build lasting friendships.
The group was thoughtfully assembled following transition meetings, where middle school teams looked at academic performance, attendance, and staff insights to match students with the opportunity. Each family received a personal invitation to join the four-day experience.
The vision behind Bridge to Success was spearheaded by Middleton High School counselor LaRon Ragsdale, working closely with Student and Family Engagement (SAFE) team member Laura Taveras-Genao and her colleagues on the SAFE team to craft the program's framework. Ragsdale, Taveras-Genao, and the SAFE team shaped an environment that blends practical preparation with engaging team-building, ensuring students immediately connect with a familiar, dedicated support system.
Incoming freshmen also partnered with current Middleton High School students, who served as mentors. They helped ensure freshmen step onto campus seeing familiar, supportive faces. Breakout sessions and campus tours helped demystify the high school experience, giving students a clear idea of what to expect while fostering a strong sense of belonging.
This year’s program expanded beyond Middleton High School’s campus to showcase future possibilities. Students visited Madison College to explore entrepreneurship and career pathways, followed by a trip to the University of Wisconsin–Madison to learn about college access and readiness. The field trips gave students an early look at post-secondary options, inspiring them to start thinking about their long-term goals.
By the end of the week, participants felt connected, prepared, and excited to take their next step.
"Looking ahead, our goal is to grow the program: get more staff involved, and really focus on what ongoing connections and support will look like once students start the school year," said Director of Student, Family, and Staff Engagement Dr. Tony Dugas.
By pairing early academic guidance with genuine connection, Bridge to Success ensures these incoming freshmen enter high school with the confidence, school pride, and support system they need to thrive this fall and beyond.
