Brian Krey

The Middleton-Cross Plains Area School District is pleased to announce Brian Krey as the new Director of Business Services, effective July 22, 2026. The Board of Education approved his position during its regular meeting on July 13.

Krey joins MCPASD from the River Valley School District in Spring Green, Wis., where he most recently served as Assistant Superintendent and Director of Finance & Operations. In addition to serving as an administrator in the River Valley School District, he served as an elementary school principal and business education teacher. Krey also served as a business services manager in the Wisconsin Dells School District and Adams-Friendship Area School District as well as a budget analyst for the Madison Metropolitan School District.

He also recently served as the chair for the Madison Association of School Business Officials, driving best practices within the field. He shared how his background in school district financial management, strategic operations, and stakeholder collaboration has shaped his leadership approach.

“Throughout my career as a business manager, I have prioritized fiscal transparency, accurate forecasting, and collaborative resource allocation,” Krey said. “I’m deeply committed to driving creative solutions to complex budget challenges, proactively seeking out cost-saving measures, and aligning financial strategies with educational goals so that every dollar directly supports student success.”

Krey’s extensive financial management experience includes successfully passing operational referendums in 2019, 2022, and 2025 in the River Valley School District.

“My role is to take the complex topic of school funding and make it easier for all stakeholders in our community to understand,” he said.

His experience also includes engaging with the broader professional and legislative community to stay at the forefront of educational finance. Krey said he looks forward to building on the strengths of former Director of Business Services Erin Wheeler, who led the District’s financial services team for 11 years.

Krey received his bachelor’s degree in business administration-general management & technology from UW-La Crosse and his master’s degree in education-school business management from UW-Whitewater.

MCPASD congratulates Krey on his role and looks forward to the impact his leadership will have on the District.
