Janice Chung, Avery Brutosky, Thomas Hsu, Clara Landucci, and Grace Rosholt were the winners in the Concerto-Aria competition held recently.

Chung was the top overall performer. She performed the clarinet and played Krommer's Clarinet Concerto No.1 Mvt. 1.

Rosholt performed on the violin and played Beethoven's Romance in F Major. Landucci performed on the viola and played Bruch's Romance. Hsu performed on the violin and played Bruch's Violin Concerto No.1, Mvt. 1. Brutosky sand and performed Mozart's "Ach, ich, fuhl's" from Die Zauberflote.

Normally, the winning students would perform with the MHS Symphony Orchestra at a concert at the Performing Arts Center along with the Eine Kleine Kindermusik concert for elementary students. Each event takes place in March. However, with restrictions on the size of indoor gatherings due to the pandemic a different format will likely occur.

The following students also auditioned: Evelyn Anderson, Michael Chiaverini, Alexa Garber, Mena Garber, Sarah Ann Huber, and Julia Zhang.

Mary Gagnon, the orchestra and guitar teacher and National Honor Society adviser at Park Center Senior High School in Brooklyn Park, Minn., and Dr. Gabe Southard, an associate professor of music at Hope College in Holland, Mich., judged the event.

“The amount of incredible work represented by this year's submissions is a testament to the students and their dedication to the musical craft,'' MHS music department instructional leader and orchestra teacher Steve Kurr said. "Especially in such a year as the one we  have had, the MHS music department staff is impressed will all of the students who participated. Congratulations on your fine accomplishments.''
