More than 100 Glacier Creek and Kromrey students have had their writing, cartoons and art work submitted as part of annual Yahara River Writers contest.

In all, 103 pieces from students in grades 5-8 were submitted. The contest includes students from 25 school districts in southern Wisconsin.  Students can submit work in one of the following categories: poetry, cartoon, short story, editorial or cover/divider pages. The Yahara contest also  accepts poetry and editorials written in Spanish. Contest results generally come by spring break. 

Winners will be notified and invited to attend a special virtual workshop and awards ceremony to be held on Tuesday, May 11. Those students' work will be included in the Yahara Anthology for 2020-21.

In other Advanced Learning news:

* Many Glacier Creek and Kromrey students have been participating in Book Club on Thursday afternoons since early October. Book Club students also had the opportunity to create Battle of the Books teams. 

The Wisconsin Educational Media and Technology Association (WEMTA) sponsors a statewide Battle of the Books program for students every year.  This program encourages students to read a variety of award winning books that reflect many different genres and cultural experiences. Battle of the Books teams will participate in virtual rounds on Feb. 17-18.  The club advisers are Melanie Cochems, Nanci Marshall, Jennifer Breezee and Stacie Sapth.

* Glacier Creek and Kromrey students who have been participating in the Future Problem Solvers program  will complete their State Bowl Qualifying Packets in early February.

Students have been studying the topic, "Human Environmental Impact" and work in teams to analyze a set of challenges related to this topic. All students will be notified in early March if they qualify for the State FPS Bowl.

Additionally,  some seventh- and eighth-grade students wrote scenarios, short stories set in the future on one of the FPS topics for this year. Ethan Sanders, Norah Kwon, Ray Feinberg, Lily Hanson, Cuvin Bhagavath, Ian McGinley and Emerson Turner had their scenarios submitted to the State FBS Scenario Writing Competition.
