Middleton High School’s boys swim & dive team earned its fourth straight Division 1 state title at the WIAA state boys swimming and diving championships in Waukesha on Feb. 21.
They're the eighth team in state history to win four consecutive state championships and the first D1 team to win four straight titles in a decade.
“The Cardinals scored 306 points to hold off runners-up Brookfield Central/East (248) to complete the first four-peat in program history and the third in Division 1 history since the WIAA split to two divisions in 1993,” the Wisconsin State Journal noted in its coverage of the state tournament.
"Everybody on our team contributed," senior Max Carter told the Wisconsin State Journal. "I'm just really proud of everyone. Not singularly proud of myself."
Carter, along with fellow seniors Ben Cutler Heiderscheit, Caden Van Buren and Sam Wolf, were among the team’s leaders this season and throughout the team’s record-breaking run.
The Wisconsin State Journal noted: “It's a sweet ending for the quartet of Cutler Heiderscheit, Van Buren, Carter and Wolf, all of whom were part of the Cardinals' first title in their four-peat as freshmen. The group has been swimming together for nearly 10 years, making another team title a fitting reminder for Wolf of how special the group was.”
Wolf, who is the first D1 boys swimmer to earn double-digit gold medals, told the Wisconsin State Journal: "It was our last go at it and we nailed it. I couldn't be happier and I'm gonna miss swimming with those guys."
Congratulations to Coach Wes Lagerhausen and the entire team on their incredible accomplishments!
