Students in Middleton High School’s Model United Nations Club recently traveled to Toronto, Canada from January 29 through February 2 to participate in a conference hosted by the University of Toronto. The event brought together high school students from across North America and, in some cases, from other parts of the world to take part in a large scale simulation of the United Nations.
Model United Nations is an international academic program that allows students to step into the role of global leaders. Each student is assigned a country and must research that nation’s policies, priorities, and position on important world issues. During the conference, students debated real global challenges, worked with peers from other schools, and drafted resolutions aimed at solving complex problems.
Middleton students participated in a wide range of committees focused on topics such as environmental policy, population and development, economic issues in Latin America and the Caribbean, global food security, maritime advancement, and even Quebec’s Federation of Maple Syrup Producers. Each committee required students to think critically, communicate clearly, and collaborate respectfully with others who may have had different perspectives.
In addition to the academic sessions, students had the opportunity to explore downtown Toronto and experience one of Canada’s most diverse and vibrant cities. The trip offered both academic growth and meaningful opportunities to connect with students from different backgrounds.
Students who participated in the trip include Dresden Drexler, Benjamin Bush, Isabella Albiter, Nathan Frushour, Maksym Malyk, Alexander Kim, Connor Peterson, Clark Lewandowski, Keegan Stockbridge, Praketh Palety, Mallak Gadelhak, Soren Johanson, and Aubrey Tank.
The Model United Nations Club meets every Monday from 4:00 to 5:00 p.m. in the MHS North LMC and attends several conferences throughout North America each year. New members are welcome to join at any point during the school year.
