Glacier Creek Middle School students on the inclusive playground section

Phase One of Glacier Creek Middle School’s inclusive playground expansion is complete, providing more ways for students of all abilities to enjoy recess.

“My favorite part of the new playground is spinning on the merry-go-round,” said Ivan, a sixth-grader who uses a wheelchair. “I like to push other people on the merry-go-round, and I’m happy that I can wheel my chair right onto the playground.”

The Glacier Creek PTO’s fundraiser led to the installment of several accessible and inclusive playground components: a Rev8 spinning climber, Aro spinning chair, merry-go-round spinner, hand cycle, Gaga Ball pit, and a set of cirque drums for sensory play. The playground also features an extension to connect the existing ADA pathway to the new section, which includes poured-in-place surfacing that provides more stability.

The merry-go-round is a favorite feature, with other favorites including the spinning climber and spinning chair. Students also shared excitement about their classmates who have disabilities being able to use more areas of the playground.

“It gives the students who maybe can’t access everything an equal chance to have a lot of the experiences that other children can have, which I personally love,” said Gillian, a sixth-grader.

“Most of the things we used to have were a lot of climbing pieces,” added Jasmine, a seventh-grader. “Now, there’s more things that people in wheelchairs or with disabilities could sit on, and it’s very ability inclusive.”

The last section of the new playground will consist of an 11-piece nucleus modular structure with climbing, balancing, and overhead play structures. These pieces will connect in a way that resembles an obstacle course.

“I’m looking forward to all of the climbing equipment and having it be like an obstacle course,” said Bria, a seventh-grader. “So, it’s not like you can just spin, but there’s also different challenges. You’re not just doing one thing the whole time; you’re doing different things.”

“I’m really excited for the climbing equipment because I like having obstacle courses and seeing how fast I can do them,” added Brielle, a seventh-grader.
