The stars of our celebration are the exceptional nutrition staff. Let's go behind the scenes to meet some of the friendly faces that set our students up for success by starting their day with a healthy breakfast!

Meet Carla Barbian | Nutrition Services Leader at Kromrey Elementary

Carla has been with the District for 19 years and grew up attending MCPASD schools. She began her career as a Paraeducator then became a Bus Driver before assuming her current role in the Nutrition Services department.

Carla has the morning routine down to a science and does a wonderful job leading her staff. She attributes her ability to work well under pressure and stay organized to her personal life. Her father worked as a Marine during her childhood. This has instilled a sense of pride in hard work that has stuck with her to this day. It is the same lessons she passes on to her children with the help of her husband, who is a former Navy man.

What Carla loves most about her work is serving alongside an awesome team and getting to know her students. She not only has maintained a friendship with some of her former students but even some of her former teachers as well!

She understands that breakfast really is the most important meal of the day. Not only is it the first meal, Carla explained, but it is the first thing they do in the morning, and it can set the tone for the rest of the day. A friendly 'hello' and 'how are you' go a long way!

"It has gotten to the point where the kids actually say hello, and enjoy coming in. They say 'hello, how are you today?' sometimes before we even get the chance to do that," Carla said.

Meet Shelly Manser | Nutrition Services Leader at MHS

For over ten years, Shelly has worked for the District, serving breakfast and lunch to all grade levels. Her can-do attitude propels her and her staff through a busy breakfast rush!

As the head of her team, Shelly oversees the ins and outs of the kitchen and sets her team up for success. One of the ways they add a little fun to the week is by creating themed breakfasts and lunches. Not only does it provide students with a little something to look forward to, but it also helps Shelly and her team prep meals for the week.

Managing her duties keeps Shelly busy, but she always makes time to greet students and make a connection each day. "The greatest thing about [working in nutrition services] is getting to know the kids and knowing that they are starting their day with a healthy and nutritious breakfast," Shelly said.

We want to give a special shout-out to our "breakfast club rockstars" during National Breakfast Week! Our staff makes the mornings a little brighter by always serving breakfast, sunny-side-up!
