05:00 — A Cardinal’s Journey Award Recognitions

The meeting began with A Cardinal’s Journey Award recognitions for students who exemplify the Cardinal Foundation of Critical Thinking and Problem Solving.

Each month, the District celebrates students who demonstrate the four Cardinal Mindsets and the four Cardinal Foundations. Students who are strong critical thinkers and problem solvers are individuals who use a variety of sources, perspectives, and strategies to find solutions to complex problems. They also find new opportunities within problems, seek long-term solutions, and apply and share their knowledge in broader contexts.

Awardees:

Jacob Jensen (Park Elementary School)

Nominated by Lisa Breunig

In nominating Jacob, Breunig shared:

“Recognizing critical thinking and problem solving in kindergarten is vital because it shifts the focus from ‘getting the right answer’ to ‘valuing the process.’ Jacob shows these qualities on a daily basis. He uses persistence in problem solving and tries different strategies. One example is in math. During math games, he adjusts if things don't go as expected and tries a different strategy. In reading, he can answer ‘why’ and ‘how questions to deepen his understanding. Jacob can stay with a difficult task until it is completed. When other students see him persevering through a difficult concept, they begin to take more risks as well with their learning. Jacob is a role model who is helpful and well liked by his peers. We are lucky to have Jacob in our kindergarten class this year.”

Congratulations, Jacob!

Anna Larson (Elm Lawn Elementary School)

Nominated by Dan Stuntebeck

In nominating Anna, Stuntebeck shared:

“Anna was strategizing a way of helping her classmates learn material for the library — they do something called ‘skill checks’ to be more independent users of the library. Since library time is limited, Anna took the initiative to make out her own practice cards for classmates to use outside of class time — a wonderful model of seeing a problem and finding creative solutions.”

Congratulations, Anna!

Martin Ortiz Calderon (Kromrey Middle School)

Nominated by Cindy Muralles

In nominating Martin, Muralles shared:

“Martin demonstrates great problem solving abilities in math class and shares his thought process with the rest of the class, making sure his classmates also have a new way of looking at problems. Additionally, Martin has navigated the English language effectively and quickly to adapt to a new country, language, and culture. We are so proud of his perseverance and his desire to help others!”

Congratulations, Martin!

Radhika Gupta (Middleton High School)

Nominated by Superintendent Dr. Dana Monogue

In nominating Radhika, Dr. Monogue shared:

“Radhika has developed an app that helps high school students organize information from clubs and activities they are involved in. She has been working on the app for almost a year. She saw a problem that needed to be solved — students being bombarded with information on a variety of platforms — and created a one-stop solution that will be attractive to high school students across the country!”

Congratulations, Radhika!

Isla Holmstrom (Middleton High School)

Nominated by Sara Schulz

In nominating Isla, Schulz shared:

“Isla Holmstrom has demonstrated exceptional abilities in critical thinking and problem solving within Middleton High School’s visual arts program. I have had the privilege of working with Isla both as a student in graphic arts classes and as a design colleague for a client within our community, and in every setting, they consistently demonstrate a remarkable ability to approach every project with a level of insight, creativity, and intentionality that sets them apart from their peers.

Isla not only expresses their own ideas in compelling and thoughtfully refined ways, but also has an outstanding talent for interpreting the concepts of others and transforming them into meaningful, impactful final products. Their creative process is grounded in strong problem solving skills as they carefully analyze challenges, explore multiple solutions, and execute their ideas with precision, originality, and purpose. Just as importantly, Isla clearly articulates their thinking, ensuring that clients and collaborators feel heard, understood, and confident throughout the design process.

Additionally, Isla is a driving force in the classroom community. They consistently contribute to the growth and success of their peers by offering insightful and constructive feedback to encourage others to think critically and expand their own ideas and technical skills. Isla brings empathy, respect, and enthusiasm to every interaction, while their drive, passion, and dedication to their craft is evident in all that they do. Whether creating independent work or collaborating with others, Isla consistently elevates the quality and impact of their work.

Isla’s unique blend of creativity, critical thinking, visual communication, and collaboration makes them not only an outstanding graphic designer and artist, but also an inspiring student who truly embodies the qualities within a Cardinal’s Journey.”

Congratulations, Isla!

17:25 — Introduction of New Elementary School Principals

New elementary school principals Josh Forehand and Kirsten Andreoni were introduced to the Board.

Forehand brings 13 years of experience as principal of Nuestro Mundo Community School, a K–5 Spanish-English dual-language immersion charter school in Madison and a candidate school for the International Baccalaureate program. His background includes leadership roles in bilingual education settings in Texas, Honduras and the Madison Metropolitan School District. He holds a bachelor’s degree in English and history from Tarleton State University and a master’s degree in educational leadership from Cardinal Stritch University.

Andreoni began her career teaching grades 1–3 before serving as an instructional coach and, most recently, as associate principal at Patrick Marsh Middle School in the Sun Prairie Area School District. She is known for a relational leadership approach and a commitment to fostering cultures of trust, high expectations and continuous improvement.

26:30 — Superintendent’s Report

In her Superintendent’s Report, Dr. Monogue provided an update on the District’s annual Years of Service event, held April 22, which recognized employee milestone anniversaries. She thanked Director of Information & Public Relations Shannon Valladolid and her team for their efforts in organizing the event. Dr. Monogue also congratulated the cast, crew, and directors of Middleton High School’s production of A Midsummer’s Night Dream.

28:45 — Annual Wellness Program Report

District Wellness Coordinator Kalise Horst presented the 2026 Annual Wellness Report to the Board, outlining the continued expansion and impact of the District’s comprehensive employee wellness program. She emphasized that the program is designed to strengthen staff well-being as a foundational support for student success, while also improving retention, engagement, and overall workplace culture across the District.

Horst reported strong and growing participation in wellness initiatives, including fitness and yoga classes, monthly wellness challenges, and other structured programming. Enrollment in fitness classes increased again this year, and participation in wellness challenges also rose, reflecting sustained staff engagement. Survey and feedback data show that a significant majority of staff feel encouraged to prioritize healthier lifestyles, with employees highlighting exercise, nutrition, supportive relationships, and work-life balance as key areas of positive impact.

A major focus of the presentation was the District’s Employee Health Clinic, which continues to serve as a central access point for care. Since opening in 2024, the clinic has provided services to more than 1,400 individual patients and completed over 8,000 appointments. Horst shared that the clinic has also generated substantial financial savings and a strong return on investment for the District, while improving access to timely care. In addition to primary care services, the clinic has expanded specialty offerings such as dermatology screening days, mental health supports, and other targeted health events, many of which have reached high demand and waitlists.

Horst also highlighted the broader impact of staff wellness on the student experience. She noted that research and District data both reinforce the connection between staff well-being and student outcomes, including improved classroom environments, reduced absenteeism, and stronger staff retention. A stable and well-supported workforce, she emphasized, directly contributes to more consistent and positive learning experiences for students.

The presentation further outlined the District’s multi-faceted implementation model, which includes mental health supports, Employee Assistance Program services, mindfulness and stress-reduction initiatives, social connection opportunities, and expanded access to fitness and wellness resources. Horst noted that these efforts are intentionally designed through a collaborative, staff-informed approach to ensure relevance and sustainability across all schools and employee groups.

She concluded by noting that the District will continue to build on this work by expanding access, responding to staff feedback, and strengthening programs that support both employee well-being and student success.

46:47 — Middle Level Update

Glacier Creek Middle School Principal Carmen Klassy and Associate Principal Mary Kern; Kromrey Middle School Principal Dom Ricks and Associate Principals Joanna Cree and Eric Engel; along with Director of Secondary Curriculum, Instruction, and Assessment Ken Metz and Assistant Superintendent of Teaching and Learning Dr. Jan Chynoweth provided the Board with an update on strategic continuous improvement efforts, collaborative learning, and professional development across the District’s two middle schools.

Academic Career Planning (ACP) has been fully integrated into core and exploratory courses, helping students connect their interests, strengths, and goals to their learning. Instruction is aligned across grade levels, and staff are refining cross-curricular opportunities following the program’s launch in fall 2025.

All staff also participated in extensive Responsive Classroom training to strengthen social-emotional learning and student engagement. This included foundational training, coaching, and classroom observations. As a result, both schools saw increases in all Responsive Classroom measured areas, including Effective Management, Positive Community, and Engaging Academics.

Literacy remains a major school improvement focus with the second year of Savvas myView (grade 5) and myPerspectives (grades 6–8). Unlike the typical “implementation dip” seen with new curriculum, early data shows growth. From fall to winter, the percentage of students identified as low risk in reading increased (from 83.4% to 83.8% overall), with notable gains among several student groups. Math data also shows steady improvement, with overall low-risk percentages rising from 84.3% in fall to 85.1% in winter.

Student engagement and belonging are also key priorities. Both schools implemented targeted strategies to strengthen peer connections, resulting in measurable gains. At Glacier Creek, peer-to-peer respect scores increased from 2.47 to 2.56. At Kromrey, “Cougar Connections” data shows high levels of student connection, with most grade levels at or above 97% in fall 2025.

In addition, participation in extracurricular activities has increased, with both schools offering 52 clubs and sports and seeing higher student involvement than last year. Positive behavior recognitions have also doubled.

Overall, both middle schools continue to focus on collaborative, data-informed practices to improve student achievement, engagement, and well-being.
