Five students pose with their Cardinals's Journey award and Board of Education Vice President Catherine Kells

The Middleton-Cross Plains Area School District recently introduced its future-preparedness framework, A Cardinal’s Journey, as a comprehensive guide for student success.

Each month, the Board of Education is recognizing students who demonstrate the four mindsets – curious, community-oriented, self-aware, and accountable – and the four foundations – communication, collaboration, critical thinking & problem solving, and adaptability – that are at the heart of A Cardinal’s Journey. Student honorees are nominated by MCPASD teachers and staff for demonstrating a specific skill or mindset.

At the Nov. 17 Board meeting, five students were honored for exemplifying a community-oriented mindset: Middleton High School students Rohan Dileep, Beatrice Norman and Griffin Schumacher; Glacier Creek Middle School student Viola Ennis; and West Middleton Elementary School student Martell Stamps.

During the meeting, Superintendent Dr. Dana Monogue recognized the honorees and shared excerpts from each student’s nomination. Board of Education Vice President Catherine Kells presented each honoree with a certificate and medal.

Dileep and Norman, Middleton High School seniors, are co-presidents of Middleton Meals Matter. The student-run nonprofit is making an impact on food insecurity locally and globally. Students are hosting food drives; advocating for community needs; mentoring younger students in civic engagement; and establishing Meals Matter chapters in high schools across Wisconsin, the United States and worldwide. They were nominated by Monogue.

Schumacher, a Middleton High School senior, was also nominated by Monogue. He was recognized for raising more than $10,000 for the River Alliance of Wisconsin, a nonprofit that advocates for clean and accessible waterways statewide. His fundraising blends a love for paddling with a strong commitment to environmental advocacy.

Ennis, a Glacier Creek Middle School student, was nominated by Sunset Ridge Principal Brett Wilfrid. A former Sunset Ridge Elementary School student, Ennis was honored for writing a persuasive essay advocating for more student gardening opportunities to beautify Sunset Ridge. Her words sparked action, resulting in the purchase of garden beds, generous donations from her family, and a partnership with K&A Greenhouse. Her garden has grown into the Ennis Family Garden Co-op, shared by the entire Sunset Ridge community.

Stamps, a West Middleton Elementary School third-grader, was nominated by Library Media Specialist Amanda Struckmeyer. He was recognized for fostering friendship, collaboration, and inclusion. He invites others to express themselves and participate in problem solving while promoting peace and connection among his peers. Martell’s actions contribute to a more welcoming and harmonious school environment.

Students’ recognition for demonstrating a community-oriented mindset follows recognition in October of a curious mindset, when the Board of Education honored four students.

Join us in congratulating these students on their community-oriented mindsets and thanking them for their positive contributions throughout the District and beyond!
