Year-long preparations led to victory for Glacier Creek and Kromrey Middle School students who competed in the Mega Math Meets this month – taking home first place, second place, and individual honors.
The process started at the beginning of the school year with a Math Meet screener for interested students in fifth through eighth grade. Students then had to qualify for the District and Regional Math Meets before advancing to the Megas, which include schools in the Greater Dane and Southern Lakes Advanced Learners Networks.
"Students who participate in competitive math practice much in the same way athletes do," said Maria Nygard, Advanced Learning Specialist at Glacier Creek and Kromrey Middle Schools.
The UW-Madison Math Department hosted the Fifth/Sixth Grade Mega Math Meet on May 21. MCPASD's teams took first and second place, with one student also taking second place in the individual competition.
The Madison College Math Department hosted the Seventh/Eighth Grade Mega Math Meet on May 27. MCPASD's teams took first and second place in the large schools division, with students also winning the top three individual spots.
In addition to sharpening mathematical knowledge, the fast-paced nature and teamwork element of Math Meets help students develop the Cardinal Mindset and Cardinal Foundations laid out in MCPASD's future-preparedness framework: A Cardinal's Journey.
"Math Meets provide students the opportunity to build problem-solving skills, foster teamwork and communication, increase their love of math, and provide the opportunity to build friendships with people who share the same interest," Nygard said.
