0:43 – Celebration of the Middleton High School Boys Swim and Dive State Championship Team

The Board of Education meeting began with an exciting celebration.
The Middleton High School Boys Swim and Dive Team was honored for winning their fourth consecutive Division 1 state title at the WIAA State Boys Swimming and Diving Championships in Waukesha on Feb. 21.
Under the leadership of coaches Wes Lagerhausen, RJ Leiferman, Mike Keleny, and Krishna Lakkaraju, the team delivered an extraordinary performance. They captured eight event victories, swept all three relay events, and broke three state records. The team scored 273 points, matching last year’s total, and finished well ahead of runner-up Verona, which scored 175 points. This marks the second consecutive year that Madison-area teams secured the top two spots.
Middleton more than doubled its number of event wins compared with the previous year and added a runner-up finish. Notably, the team set a new state record in the 200-yard freestyle relay, giving Middleton control of all three relay records. Their performance was described by the Wisconsin State Journal as “utter dominance.”
Congratulations to Coaches Wes Lagerhausen, RJ Leiferman, Mike Keleny, and Krishna Lakkaraju, the student-athletes of the Middleton High School Boys Swim and Dive Team, and everyone who supported them along the way. Your dedication, teamwork, and sportsmanship make our entire community proud.
6:10 – Superintendent’s Report
In her Superintendent’s Report, Superintendent Dr. Dana Monogue congratulated MHS wrestler Reed Falk, who won a state championship this weekend. Reed is the school’s first wrestling state champion since 2016 and completed an undefeated season.
She also shared that the choral program will host its annual Country Breakfast this Sunday in the North Commons at MHS. Tickets may be purchased in advance or at the door on the day of the event.
7:18 – Sauk Trail Elementary School Achievement Gap Reduction (AGR) Winter Progress Report
Principal Chris Dahlk provided the winter report on Sauk Trail Elementary’s Achievement Gap Reduction (AGR) program, a state-funded initiative focused on improving student outcomes through targeted instructional supports. She explained that the school continues to implement three key strategies outlined in the AGR contract: reducing class sizes to allow for more individualized attention, providing data-driven instructional coaching for teachers, and offering 1:1 tutoring for students in need. Literacy interventionists deliver the tutoring, while a full-time instructional coach works across grade levels to support high-impact teaching practices.
She also shared student progress data from fall to winter across kindergarten through third grade in both literacy and math. Assessments such as Aimsweb Plus and STAR Math are used to monitor growth. Results showed steady performance overall, with notable gains in areas such as third-grade literacy and first-grade math, while some grades experienced slight fluctuations as benchmarks became more rigorous.
In addition to academic data, the report highlighted ongoing school priorities, including strengthening foundational literacy skills, building vocabulary and oral language development, supporting social-emotional learning, and improving student attendance. Sauk Trail has also welcomed 31 new students this year and serves a diverse population that includes 92 multilingual learners. Dahlk emphasized that staff collaboration, small-group instruction, and continuous data review remain central to closing achievement gaps and supporting every student’s success.
30:09 – School Resource Officer (SRO) Report
Safety and Security Coordinator Asher Torbeck, along with the District’s School Resource Officers (SROs), provided the Board of Education with a comprehensive overview of safety and security efforts across MCPASD. The presentation highlighted the strong partnership between the district and local law enforcement agencies to maintain safe, supportive learning environments for students and staff.
At the District level, the team conducts ongoing, proactive safety work throughout the year. This includes annual training for all staff, classroom walkthroughs, safety drills, Situation Response Team training, and monthly meetings to identify concerns and coordinate responses. The team also collaborates with schools on safety planning, maintains direct communication during incidents, shares best practices from other districts, and engages families through PTO and parent meetings.
The Board also learned about the roles and responsibilities of the district’s School Resource Officers. Officer Rodger Siver of the Cross Plains Police Department serves Glacier Creek Middle School and Park Elementary School. Officer Cassidy Ruchti of the Middleton Police Department serves Kromrey Middle School and Middleton Elementary School. Officers Kevin Thompson and Jake Ungerer of the Middleton Police Department serve Middleton High School. Each officer completes extensive specialized training in areas such as crisis intervention, behavioral threat assessment, active threat response, reunification procedures, and youth-focused investigations.
Data shared during the presentation demonstrated the scope of SRO involvement across schools. Cross Plains schools reported 207 calls for service and approximately 300 hours dedicated to school-related responses. Kromrey Middle School and Middleton Elementary recorded 83 calls, while Middleton High School reported 167 calls for service during the current school year. Incidents addressed by SROs ranged from disturbances, theft, and suspicious activity to mental health responses, traffic concerns, and support for special events.
Beyond responding to incidents, SROs maintain a consistent daily presence in schools. Their responsibilities include greeting students, monitoring entrances, supervising lunch and recess, conducting hallway checks, supporting dismissal procedures, teaching safety or health lessons, and assisting with drills and emergency preparedness. At the high school level, officers also provide student mentoring, classroom presentations, club engagement, and security for major events such as athletic competitions, dances, and graduation.
A major emphasis of the report was relationship building. Officers regularly participate in classroom visits, PTO events, school activities, and community programs to foster trust and positive connections with students. Initiatives such as mentoring programs, visits to the Early Learning Center, and involvement in student groups help ensure that officers are viewed as approachable, supportive adults within the school community.
The presentation also highlighted the use of Wisconsin’s “Speak Up, Speak Out” system, which allows students and community members to report safety concerns. Dozens of tips were submitted this year across district schools, demonstrating that students and families are actively using available tools to share information and help keep their schools safe.
1:27:30 – Approval of 2024-25 School Year Single Audit Report
The Board of Education reviewed and approved the District’s 2024–25 Single Audit Report.
Each year, our District undergoes an independent audit to ensure we are managing taxpayer dollars responsibly and following all required state and federal guidelines. We are proud to share that the auditors issued a clean, unmodified opinion, the highest level of assurance possible. This marks the District’s ninth consecutive year of clean audits.
The audit found no material weaknesses in our financial controls, no significant compliance issues, and no audit findings related to federal or state programs. The District also qualified as a low-risk auditee, reflecting strong financial practices and careful oversight.
