Middleton High School junior Sophia Chen will be honored with a Volunteer of the Year Award as part of the Governor's Service Awards bestowed by Serve Wisconsin for her work with the nonprofit Youth4Youth in a June 24 ceremony at Olbrich Botanical Gardens.
Chen is the founder of Youth4Youth, a student-led 501(C)(3) nonprofit that provides first-generation students with tutoring and academic support.
“As a first-generation student myself, this mission has been a meaningful part of my life, and it is something I care deeply about,” Chen said.
The nonprofit has about 20 student-tutors working with more than 400 students in seven states. They provide in-person and online tutoring and support.
“Much of our work focuses on helping students navigate challenges related to English-language learning and the college application process in order to help bridge educational gaps for first-generation families,” Chen said.
The Governor's Service Awards honor individuals and programs for their exceptional dedication to service through AmeriCorps, AmeriCorps Seniors, and other impactful volunteer initiatives.
Serve Wisconsin works with AmeriCorps programs and volunteer organizations throughout the state to address educational, environmental, public health and other community needs. Serve Wisconsin is governed by a 21-member citizen body appointed by Governor Tony Evers.
Earlier this year, Chen and classmate Sophia Pientka were honored as recipients of the 2025 Governor’s Financial Literacy Award for their Finance for Life project, which helps middle school students in Dane County increase their financial literacy. Of the 21 award recipients, Chen and Pientka were the only student honorees.
