In recognition of Pride Month in June, MCPASD reaffirmed its commitment to creating a safe and welcoming environment by uplifting student voices and showing support for the LGBTQ+ community.
District leaders were joined by staff members and students from Kromrey Middle School's Allies Club to raise the Pride flag at the District Services Center on June 5. Eighth grader Rowan said symbols like the Pride flag help members of the LGBTQ+ community feel supported.
"It gives us a sense of pride and a little more strength," Rowan said. "It's important that we can get recognized and be celebrated just like everyone else."
Students said a club like Allies is a safe place to learn about important topics in a "relatively lighthearted way" and have fun with friends. They also said that education about the LGBTQ+ community, and asking someone for their preferred name and pronouns, are important steps towards increasing inclusivity.
"From what I've experienced, it's mostly just using the right pronouns and names," eighth grader Benjamin said. Rowan agreed: "A lot of people are uncomfortable or just not educated about using different pronouns or flags, stuff like that."
