MCPASD Teacher Named Finalist for National Award Honoring Mathematics and Science Educators

In an era where science and technology play pivotal roles in our lives, educators who inspire and engage students in these disciplines are more valuable than ever. The Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction has cast a well-deserved spotlight on six such educators as finalists for the esteemed 2024 Presidential Awards for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching (PAEMST). Amidst these accomplished teachers, Rhonda Veroeven, a passionate sixth grade science teacher from Glacier Creek Middle School in the Middleton-Cross Plains Area School District, stands out for her exceptional dedication and innovative teaching methods.

PAEMST, the most prestigious honor for U.S. math and science teachers, acknowledges the crucial role such professionals play in developing critical thinking and problem-solving skills among students. State Superintendent Dr. Jill Underly praised the finalists, stating, “These amazing teachers, all finalists for Presidential Awards for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching, exemplify what it means to be an effective educator. They have expertise in math and science, and they have an unwavering passion and commitment. I know they inspire their students – they inspire all of us – and I congratulate them and thank them for going above and beyond in supporting their students.”

Rhonda Veroeven represents the epitome of an outstanding educator, someone who not only possesses deep knowledge in her respective field, but also fosters a learning environment where students thrive. Her approach conveys more than information – it inspires a love of learning and curiosity that transcends the classroom. Her work at Glacier Creek Middle School has made a noteworthy impact, resonating with her students and reverberating across the educational community.

The finalists from Wisconsin nominated for the 2024 PAEMST include:

  • Jacquelynn Bazylewicz (Edgewood Elementary, School District of Greenfield)

  • Debra Heitman (Coleman Elementary School, Coleman School District)

  • Mary Ellen Kanthack (Brookwood Middle School, Genoa City Joint 2 School District)

  • Sheila Kohl (West De Pere Intermediate School, School District of West De Pere)

  • Melissa Sperle (Winskill Elementary School, Lancaster Community Schools)

The PAEMST program, in place since 1983, involves careful selection by state committees followed by a rigorous national judging process. The awards not only celebrate the winners but also serve to highlight effective education models and strategies that can be replicated across the country.

For Rhonda Veroeven and her fellow finalists, the national recognition is a testament to their impact within and beyond the classroom walls. The finalists, through their expertise and heartfelt dedication, empower the next generation of scientists, engineers, and mathematicians.
