The goal of the MCPASD Code of Conduct is to provide students and adults a framework for navigating personal, social, or cultural conflicts. Please review the complete MCPASD Code of Conduct.
Attendance
Reporting Absences
Children are required by law to be in attendance at school, except that they may be excused for illness or a religious holiday. Parents whose children will not be in school should call 829-9050, and then dial number 4 for Northside. Parents should be prepared to leave a message with the child's name, grade level, teacher, date of absence, reason for absence, parent's name and a phone number where the parent can be reached during the day. A message should be left by 8:30 a.m. for each day the child is absent. For your convenience, this service is available on a 24-hour basis. Absences without parent permission are considered to be unexcused.
Returning to School After an Absence
Children or their parents are responsible for finding out what work needs to be made up due to absence. If you feel your child is well enough to return to school after an illness or injury, but would like to have him/her remain indoors during recess, a note from you is sufficient to keep your child inside for up to two days after an illness. If more than two days are required, a physician's statement would authorize the teacher to keep your child indoors or restrict activity for as long as necessary to recover from the illness.
Taking Children Out of School for Vacations
Although it is not recommended to take children out of school for an extended period of time, we will make reasonable attempts to supplement work missed. Advance assignments and sending classroom materials, etc., will be limited, and at the discretion of the teacher. Teachers will not be expected to reteach a lesson. If you are taking your child out of school for an extended period of time, please complete and sign the form available in school office. The completed form should be returned to the school office prior to the absence.
Doctor or Dentist Appointments
If possible, please make dental and doctor appointments for times other than during school hours. In cases where this is not possible, please inform the office and the classroom teacher of the time you will pick your child up and the approximate time they will return to school. In all cases, students should be picked up at the school office and signed out by a parent/guardian, and check in at the office when returning to school.
Miscellaneous
Parking and Student Drop Off/Pick Up
Please follow these reminders when dropping a student off at Northside in the drop off lane in front of the school. It will help keep our kids safe!
Please pull all the way forward. This will allow more cars to drop students off and not cause a backup.
Drivers, please do not get out of the car. Students being dropped off in the drop off lane need to be able to do so independently. The drop off lane is meant to be a quick and independent drop off.
Please do not let students get out on the driver's side doors. With so many cars using the drop off lane, it is very unsafe for students to exit on the driver's side.
Visitor Tags
Parents and visitors are always welcome at Northside. Your help and involvement in your child's education is always appreciated. However, for the safety of everyone in our building, we ask that ALL visitors ALWAYS sign in at the office and wear a visitor tag while at school and on the playground. This is simply a way for our staff to quickly see and assess that all visitors have checked in at the office.
Cold Weather Reminders
Children must be dressed adequately to be outdoors before school, during recess periods and after eating lunch. The use of snow pants and boots is encouraged so children may take advantage of the snow.
It is necessary that shoes be worn by children at all times when in the school buildings. When snow boots are worn, shoes should be carried or kept in school to be worn during the day.
Children should not arrive at school excessively early. Supervision before 7:30 a.m. is not provided. Children may come into the building and proceed to the classrooms at 7:30 a.m. If the wind chill is 10 degrees below zero, children will be allowed into the hallways by the entrances until the bell rings at 7:40.
Recess Periods During Cold Weather
All elementary schools in the Middleton-Cross Plains Area School District follow similar guidelines for requiring students to stay indoors due to cold weather. The wind chill and raw temperatures are the criteria used. When the wind chill factor is -10 degrees below zero or more and if the raw temperature is at zero degrees or below, children will remain inside for recess. Students will also line up inside the school during days of extreme cold.
Animals in School
Please note the District has adopted an Animals in Schools Policy. Students may bring pets in for show and tell, unit study, etc. for a limited time. Principal permission must be granted and the owner/parent/guardian must remain with the animal(s) and provide supervision during its entire stay in the classroom. In addition, the Request Form, Student Verification Form and Staff Verification From must be completed prior to the animal(s) classroom visit. No reptiles or amphibians will be permitted in grades EC through 8th grade.
