Service Learning Hours Requirement

Middleton High School aims to graduate students who are actively engaged and think critically about what is happening in the world, who have the tools to act on their ideas, and who are empathetic, collaborative, and reflective. It is our belief that a heart for service cannot be mandated. Justice, peace, community, stewardship and equity opportunities offered to students, modeled by adults and celebrated in the school community, will garner the greatest opportunities for student reflection and lifelong action. Additionally, service learning will continue to be embedded in coursework and cultivated in Middleton High School clubs and activities.

For these reasons, our School Board endorsed the following recommendation in May, 2021:

  • Service Learning be removed from the Middleton High School Graduation Requirements

  • Service is strongly encouraged and actively rewarded and recognized by the school community

  • Adult volunteers and MHS Faculty continue to reinforce the idea of a lifetime of giving back

    and contributing to the community
