All About West Middleton

West Middleton Elementary is currently a school of approximately 420 students located on the outskirts of Madison , WI . Its attendance area is primarily of suburban residential housing, with only about 100 students residing in rental units. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced lunch is approximately 15%. Due to the location of school next to a highly traveled highway, all students are bused to school, though bike paths from some neighborhoods provide the opportunity for bicycle transportation for some students.

West Middleton has characteristics of diversity in that some students reside in poverty, while most of the remainder of the student population is from upper middle class or affluence. The two main ethnic groups comprising our student population are either white or African American. Additionally, there are about 30 students who are English language learners, with the largest percentage being students of Latino descent.

Class sizes average about 22 students per classroom. There are generally three sections in each grade. There are special education programs to address needs in learning disabilities, speech and language, occupational and physical therapy, and emotional/behavioral disabilities. A reading specialist is on staff to supplement reading instruction, and a half time teacher is available as a resource for teachers to challenge gifted students. Further, staff members are employed to provide additional math support.

All students have instruction in art one time per week, music two times per week, and physical education three times per week. Additionally, students in all grades have an enrichment class based on technology once per week. Keyboarding is taught in grades four and five, and younger students are able to access the computer lab as a class with their teacher.

All regular education classrooms are equipped with Smartboards and projectors, with the same equipment being standard in music, art, and reading rooms.
