Channel 3000 offers a free email service to let you know when you school district has closed due to weather. To sign up, click here. If students are dismissed early from school due to inclement weather or other reasons, staff will be asked to refer to the information you provided on the Early Dismissal Information Form. This form is handed out to parents to be completed sometime in October. Due to the fact that we have a limited number of phone lines coming into school, we cannot call all families to alert them of these dismissals. Please don't forget to make arrangements with family, neighbors or friends to take care of your children in the event of an early dismissal. School Closing FAQsWhat is our #1 concern? We strongly believe that the safety of all children is our number one priority. The decision to close or delay schools is not taken lightly. Closing schools disrupts work schedules and causes inconveniences for parents and their employers. However, the lives of our children far outweigh the inconveniences caused by the District's decision to close, delay or dismiss school early. When are schools closed or delayed? The School District closely follows weather predictions during the winter. The District contracts with WeatherNet, which contacts the Superintendent when the weather forecast calls for snow, sleet, hazardous conditions due to blowing and drifting, and temperatures/wind chills below zero. Early in the morning, the Superintendent consults with the Transportation Supervisor, other area superintendents, WeatherNet, and the Sheriff's Department to determine if the weather conditions warrant closing schools, or delaying the school day. Are there cold weather guidelines? Schools are closed when temperatures are 25 degrees below zero actual, or 50 degrees below wind chill. When will a school closing announcement be made? School closing information will be announced on local TV and radio stations, as well as the District hotline beginning at 6:00 a.m. and continuing throughout the morning. Parents can sign up for eNews and receive an email at home or work when schools are closed. To register for eNews, go to our home page and click on the link to sign up. Does this include private schools in our district? Yes! If district schools are closed due to inclement weather, St. Francis, St. Peter's, Westside Christian and Peace Thru Christ schools will also close. What if weather conditions change? If conditions change rapidly, stay tuned for updates throughout the day. Are all events canceled if school is canceled for the day? Co-curricular, evening activities and after school day care programs at elementary and middle schools would be canceled. Decisions on high school activities would be made by noon and put on the info-activity line, 829-9040. When are schools delayed? Under unusual and rare circumstances, a one or two-hour delay in the starting time may be considered due to inclement weather conditions. This delay would be announced on the stations listed on this sheet. If schools are delayed for two hours, early childhood classes will be canceled. When schools are delayed, the CRT (late start) schedule is followed. What happens if schools need to be closed early? During the school day, early closing of schools due to weather conditions will be announced on the radio/TV stations listed above. Will you call me when this happens? We're sorry, but school personnel are not responsible for contacting parents by telephone. Parents should make arrangements with neighbors or friends for the safe care of their children in these types of situations. What if the dismissal is near the lunch hour? If early dismissal occurs during or near the lunch period, every attempt will be made to allow students to eat prior to dismissal. Will after school activities be held if school is dismissed early? If early dismissal occurs during the day, co-curricular, evening activities and after school day care programs will be canceled. What happens if my road is unsafe for the school bus to travel? In the event a particular road is judged to be unsafe for travel, the transportation office will notify the schools of the students not transported. Under such conditions, parents will use their discretion whether or not they choose to transport their own children to and from school. Students kept at home due to impassable roads will be allowed to make up work. What if school is not closed and I think it's too dangerous to send my student(s) to school? Ultimately, the decision not to send your student(s) to school rest with the parent or guardian. Students kept home due to this parental decision will not be allowed to make up work. Please contact the school to let them know your child will not be attending school that day. |
