Classroom Snack and Food Information
Northside Elementary School
As mandated by federal law, all school districts have developed Wellness Policies which affect the type of food that can be consumed in school. This includes hot lunch and breakfast programs, class parties, snacks, special events and special occasion treats (such as birthdays). The following explanation outlines our school “food” policies and procedures.
Foods that are high fat (more than 30% of calories from fat) or high in saturated fat (more than 10% of calories from fat) cannot be sold or served in school. There is usually a line on the nutrition label indicating the % of calories from fat and saturated fat. Nuts and seeds are exempted from this standard due to their high nutritional value. Further, candy and home-baked goods are not acceptable. To help students and families with this change, see the the lists below.
*When bringing in nuts, please make sure no children in the classroom have nut allergies.
**Please Note: This is not an all-inclusive list. If you want to know if an item is acceptable, use the following criteria:
-
No candy
-
No more than 30% of calories from fat
-
No more than 10% of calories from saturated fat
-
No soda or sugar-added beverages
