MHS to host Madison Model U.N. on Saturday
MHS will host the third annual Madison Model United Nations Confrence (MadMUN) on Saturday.
The conference will run from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. This year’s conference will feature guest speakers Joe Elder from UW-Madison and Esther Hyneman from Women for Afghan Women.
Elder has taught at UW-Madison for 50 years and now teaches sociology, language, and culture of Asia. Hyneman retired from teaching literature and women’s studies at Long Island University and is now on the board of directors of Women for Afghan Women. She spends six months a year in Afghanistan working to improve the lives of women through WAW.
Among the topics being discussed at MadMUN are alternative energy investment, nuclear non-proliferation, the ongoing conflict in Syria, the situation in Libya, and United States-Pakistan relations. More than 100 students from Madison West, Middleton, Monona Grove, and McFarland High Schools will participate in the conference.
Model United Nations is an extracurricular club at the high school that encourages students to take on other countries' perspectives to foster debate in a simulation of the United Nations.
