MHS has 13 National Merit Semifinalists
MHS tied a record with 13 National Merit Semifinalists, the National Merit Scholarship Corporation announced on Wednesday.
MHS also had 13 semifinalists in 2011. Approximately 270 MHS students took the Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude Test (PSAT) last year.
The 13 students are: Evan Bauch, Christie Cheng, Elizabeth Couser, Christopher Eom, Alexander Goodsett, Michael Hoot, Casey Hutchison, Rebecca Jin, Suzy Kim, Laura Knutsen, Megan Phillips, Victoria Wang and Kimberli Ward.
There were 78 students in the Dane County area and 330 students statewide among about 16,000 high school seniors honored as 2013 National Merit Semifinalists.
Semifinalists represent the top 1 percent of the approximately 1.5 million students who took the PSAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test last year. About 90 percent of semifinalists become finalists, who are eligible to receive one of 8,300 college scholarships totaling more than $32 million next spring.
NMSC is a non-profit organization that operates without government assistance and was established in 1955. Scholarships are underwritten by NMSC with its own funds and by approximately 440 business organizations and higher education institutions.
