Ski, snowboard teams advance to state

The MHS boys and girls snowboard teams fared well at the WHSARA Southern Conference meet on Monday, Feb. 13 at Tyrol Basin Ski Area in Mount Horeb and all four teams earned berths at the upcoming Wisconsin Interscholastic Alpine Racing Association (WIARA) State Championships at Mount La Crosse.

The boys and girls boarders dominated their races, with seven boys -- seniors Alec Johnson, Max Lawerence, Sam Andeson, Campbell Esbeck and Jackson Grimm and juniors John Jones and Alex Andler -- earning all-conference honors. Johnson finished the season as the conference points leader and was named conference MVP.

The girls had five all-conference boarders -- senior Abigail Drake, junior Paige Wirth, sophomore Megan Chandler, and freshmen Cecelia Jones and Emelie Gehrke-Kallstromer. Jones finished second in points in the conference.  The girls team also won the conference sportsmanship award.

“I’m extremely proud of what the snowboard teams accomplished this year,'' coach Darrin Kolka said. " Both teams won their conference championships by winning every single race of the season. This has never been done before in our conference.”

The boys team finished second at state last year, while the girls were third.

Meanwhile, the boys ski team finsihed second at conference, while the girls team finished fourth.

Seniors Olivia Krigbaum, Austin Krantz, and Eric Andersen, junior Alec Riddle and sophomore Nick Ronnie were named all-conference.  Ronnie was third in the conference in points, while Krigbaum was seventh. Riddle was named the conference’s most improved boys skier. 

"Coach Midori Shaw and I are proud of the teams,'' coach Ray Riddle said. "They battled all year and accomplished our early season goals of gaining state invites while hopefully having some fun along the way.''

once again easily won their respective WHSARA Southern Conference races on Monday, Feb. 6 at Tyrol Basin Ski Area in Mount Horeb.

The teams have each won five races in a row. Seniors Alec Johnson, Sam Anderson and Max Lawrence swept the top three spots for the boys, while the girls were led by freshman Cecelia Jones, who placed second, freshman Emelie Gehrke-Kallstromer (3rd) and junior Paige Wirth (4th). Both teams participated in boardercross races.

Sophomore Nick Ronnie was fifth, junior Alec Riddle eighth and senior Austin Krantz ninth as the boys ski team placed second in its giant slalom race. The girls team finished fourth behind senior Olivia Krigbaum, who placed sixth.

The WHSARA Southern Conference finals will take place on Monday, Feb. 13 at Tyrol Basin.

Each team placed nine competitors among the top 15 at the conference meet on Jan. 23 at Tyrol Basin. The boys team was led by seniors Alec Johnson, Sam Anderson and Max Lawrence, who took the top three spots. The girls team was led by freshman Cecelia Jones, who finished in second, and sophomore Megan Chandler, who placed fourth.

The boys ski team finished second by just 0.43 seconds to the Madison co-op team. Sophomore Nick Ronnie was second, junior Alec Riddle was sixth and senior Eric Anderson was seventh. The girls team placed seventh, led by junior Erika Rader's 19th-place finish.

The snowboard teams also won their Southern Conference boarder-cross races on Jan. 9 at Tyrol Basin. The teams were scheduled to compete on Jan. 16 at Cascade Mountain outside of Portage but the races were canceled due to weather.

The girls team had eight boarders earn points, led by freshmen Cecelia Jones and Emelie Gehrke-Kallstromer, who were second and third, respectively. The boys team was led by seniors Alec Johnson (first), Max Lawrence (second) and junior John Jones (fourth).

The boys and girls ski teams competed in their first slaloms of the year. The boys team placed third and had only three members -- sophomore Nick Ronnie (11th), senior Eric Andersen (13th) and senior Austin Krantz (15th) -- earn points. The girls team placed fourth and was led by senior Olivia Krigbaum, who finished in sixth place.

The teams' next meet is Jan. 16, with the skiers at Cascade Mountain in Portage and the boarders at Tyrol Basin.

Meanwhile, the ski and snowboard teams overcame the drizzle and fog and fared exceptionally well at their season-opening meet on Jan. 2.

The boys and girls board teams each took first place as did the boys ski team at the WHSARA Southern Conference meet, which was held at Tyrol Basin. Nearly 120 skiers and 80 boarders competed.

The girls board team was led by Jones, who took second place. Junior Paige Wirth was third, sophomore Megan Chandler fourth, sophomore Hannah Laufenberg seventh, Gehrke-Kallstromer eighth, senior Abigail Drake ninth and sophomore Samantha Williams 11th. 

Johnson finished in first place to lead the boys board team. Lawrence was second, Jones third, senior Campbell Esbeck sixth, junior Alex Andler 11th and sophomore Liam Noel 14th.

The boys ski team edged the Madison Area COOP team by 0.01 seconds to win the meet. Krantz placed third, Ronnie fifth, junior Alec Riddle ninth and Andersen 15th. 

The girls ski team, led by Krigbaum’s seventh-place finish, came in a fourth place overall.
