Relay for Life set for May 13

Printer-friendly version

The fifth annual Middleton High School Relay for Life will take place from 6 p.m. to midnight on Saturday, May 13.

Since 2013, the event has raised more than $110,000 to benefit the American Cancer Society. This year's event will be held, weather permitting, at Breitenbach Stadium.

The American Cancer Society Relay For Life movement is the world’s largest fundraising event to save lives from cancer. Uniting communities across the globe, Relay for Life celebrates those who have battled cancer, remembers loved ones lost, and takes action for lifesaving change. Funds raised help the American Cancer Society provide free information and support for people facing the disease, educate people about how to reduce their risk for cancer or detect it early when it is the easiest to treat, and fund cancer research that will help protect future generations.

This year’s event will be held outside on the track in hopes of encouraging more community members to attend the event and support the high school students who have worked diligently year-round to plan this event, MHS Relay for Life adviser Megan Revello said. This year’s theme is “Carnival for a Cure” and the Volunteer Event Leadership Team hopes to raise at least $20,000.

Music, food, an inflatable obstacle course, carnival games and more will be available, Revello said.

Any MHS student, District staff member or Board of Education member may form a team or register as an individual by visiting the MHS Relay for Life site and click on on Join this Relay.

Other ways to support the MHS Relay For Life:

  • Invite cancer survivors and caregivers to attend the event to participate in our honorary laps and a special survivor/caregiver dinner. The opening ceremony will start promptly at 6 p.m. with the survivor and caregiver laps immediately following. A light dinner will also be provided to survivor and caregivers, donated by local Middleton restaurants. Please e-mail Sam Worden if you plan on attending the dinner.
  • Luminaria are also available for donation “in memory of” or “in honor of” those who have been touched by cancer. They will be decorated for your loved ones and will line the track all night. The Luminaria bags are available online or the night of the event for $5.
  • Donations to the MHS Relay for Life or to a specific participant/team can be made on the Relay website.
  • If you are interested in volunteering at the event, please e-mail Revello.

Members of the MHS Relay For Life Event Leadership Team include Courtney Florin, Marissa Masnica, Lauren Domanico, Sam Worden, Sophia Revord, Sarah Engle, Shuka Konishi, Jake Lamers, Maeve Gonter, Davis Roquet, Emily Florin, and Natalie Asmus.

The Relay for Life Event Leadership Team is also looking for businesses to donate prizes, such as gift cards, for a raffle. Sponsors are also needed and various levels are available. Please contact Revello to learn more.
