MHS athletic teams will host three Coaches vs. Cancer events over the next month.
The first event is tonight when the MHS boys hockey team hosts Madison East/La Follette at Capitol Ice Arena at 8 p.m. On Thursday, the MHS girls basketball team will hold its event when the Cardinals host Verona at 7:30 p.m. in the Varsity Gym. The boys basketball team will hold its event on Jan. 4 when the Cardinals host Verona as well.
The Coaches vs. Cancer program is a nationwide collaboration between the American Cancer Society and the National Association of Basketball Coaches that empowers coaches, their teams, and local communities to make a difference in the fight against cancer.
This year, the MHS Relay for Life committee is pairing up with the Coaches vs. Cancer program to help raise funds for local cancer survivors and MHS's Relay for Life on April 5-6, which benefits the American Cancer Society, and to raise awareness about the importance of cancer prevention, early detection, and making healthy lifestyle choices.
Before all three games, students will be creating a "Wall of Hope" and the MHS student council will be selling "Teaming Up Against Cancer" T-shirts for those who haven't already purchased one.
During halftime of both games, a Bucket Pass will be e held where funds will be raised for 83 seconds to represent the 83 people in Wisconsin who are diagnosed with cancer each day. Last year $2,173 was raised during the bucket pass and through Wall of Hope and T-shirt sales. Wall of Hope cards are available through a suggested donation of $1.
"We hope to raise even more this year,'' MHS staff member Allie Warner said. "We hope you'll come out for at least one of the games with your family and friends, but if you can't make it you can still support this great cause!''
Relay for Life committee members include: Olivia Kossel, Angie Newman, Emma Waldinger, Marissa Masnica, Ivraj Seerha, Jack Kim, Nikhil Trivedi, Julia Handel, Henry Dean, Kat Stein and Rachel Hilgers.
