About Middleton Alternative Senior High (MASH)What is MASH? Middleton Alternative Senior High (MASH) is a program designed for students who have decided that they can learn better in a different setting. Some have struggles to attend or complete a regular program at Middleton High School. Others simply desire a smaller setting. All students are interested in a more individualized academic schedule tied to their own interests, skills, and abilities. MASH offers a balanced program, which emphasizes personal growth and life skills as well as academic achievement. Nine teachers, a part time social worker/AODA coordinator, a full time administrator, and a part time program support person staff MASH. Students in their second, third, fourth or fifth year of high school may be referred to the MASH program by Middleton High School administrators, guidance counselors or staff. Referrals may also be made by parents or the student themselves. The MASH staff evaluates the student's transcript and attendance record and the student is interviewed before admission. Students who are deemed appropriate referrals and are not admitted are placed on a waiting list until an opening is available. The program's maximum capacity is approximately 100 students. As there tend to be more students referred to MASH than spaces available, the MASH staff makes admission decisions based on a student's year in school, their need for alternative programming, and their demonstrated desire to improve performance. MASH offers approximately 100 students the opportunity to attend classes that are taught in a variety of ways. Students are given the option of taking a full academic schedule. English, social studies, math, science, speech, physical education, health, art, community service, and work opportunity credits are offered throughout the school year. Students may also attend classes at Middleton High School. Educational Program: MASH focuses primarily on the sixteen (16) core credits required for graduation. The decision of how students will fulfill elective graduation credit requirements is based upon advice and consent of the MASH teachers, Middleton High School staff and parents. The MASH curriculum:
