Johnston finished second in the beginner-non-heritage category of the Wisconsin Association of Chinese Language Teachers Speech and Pronunciation Contest.
More than 100 students from across the state participated in the ninth annual event, which was held at the Mosse Humanities Building on the University of Wisconsin-Madison campus.
Johnson is a first-year level-one student at MHS.
"Hayden has been working hard in and outside of class,'' said Piyanut Sripanawongsa, who teaches Mandarin at MHS.
Contestants had to deliver a speech on a topic of their choosing or recite a poem, song or story. Presentations had to be original and between 2-5 minutes. Speakers were judged on accuracy of pronunciation, correctness of tones, fluency of language, content of speech and overall delivery.
Johnston wrote a story about three animal friends who share certain interests and decide to have a party with lots of food. You can watch Johnston's presentation on YouTube.
In addition to the standard speech, participants may opt to recite a poem or song, or tell a story. Any reasonable content is acceptable, and contestants will be judged according to ability level. Heritage and partial heritage speaker status will also be taken into consideration.
